PROTECK MOTORSPORT WIN 2011 HOPWOOD 100

The Proteck motorsport team Headed By Kieren & Garry Pilkington Headed down to a freezing cold Wakefield Park in July to compete in the annual hopwood 100. Competing Against a strong field with cars from NSW and VIC. The Proteck performance team Qualified the car in 4th place after the wet 10 minute Qualifying session on saturday morning.  The other Proteck motorsport entered cars had a good start too with the number 15 HQ of Kavich & Wanlum Qualifying in a very solid 5th position. The Healey & Green car was 6th, Then the Miller & Walters car was 15th.

 

 The Heats were fiercly fought as only the top 10 after the heats would go into the shootout to see who would start from pole. After the two heats the 68 HQ of Kieren & Garry were 7th after being 7th and 4th in the heats. the healey/green car was in 4th after a 3rd and 6th in the heat races and the 15 car of kavich & Wanlum just made the top 10 in 10th place after a 13th and an 8th place.

 

Mick Kavich was first out the gate for the shootout and put in a clean lap he would end up starting from 9th. Kieren was next out in the Number 68 HQ and posted a very fast 1:16.9 this lap would remain unbeaten untill the last car out took pole from him so the 68 car would start from p2 on the front row. The Healey & Green car would start from 5th position after a good clean lap.

 

The field assembled for the start of the Hopwood 100, a 100Km endurance race with a compulsory driver change. Garry made a good start in the 68 car and held 2nd till the start of the second lap where he was relegated to third and would remain there for the duration of his stint. the 15 car had Kavich start the race and made good progress running as high as 3rd before there driver change late in the race. sadly the healey & Green car bowed out with an engine failure around lap 13. By the half way mark Kieren had taken over the 68 Pilkington Motorsport Engineering Car and had moved to second place and was closing fast on the leader. He took the lead on lap 28 of 46 Just before the safety car was deployed to retrieve a stranded car. with the field compressed the 15 car of Kavich & Wanlum were able to make their way up to finish in a very credible 7th place. The Miller & Walters car made up four places to finish in 11th place. But it was the 68 HQ of Garry & Kieren that would be victorious winning the endurance race by eight seconds and taking the Proteck motorsport team back to the top step of the podium and becoming the 2011 Hopwood 100 Champions.
